Installation and setup of VPN from the home office
Currently, use is only possible under Windows. We are working on an implementation for MacOS.
What is VPN?
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) establishes an encrypted connection between your device and the university. It acts as a secure tunnel that protects your data. While the VPN connection to the university network is established, you can also access all university data and systems as if you were on site. This gives you unrestricted access to internal resources and network drives while you are working from home.
Institution
Preparation and requirements
- A university device
- Your personally assigned and activated YubiKey
- Windows 11
- Support for MacOS devices is being worked on
- The initial setup must take place in the university's internal network
Installation
- Open the Baramundi Kiosk via the taskbar
- Select the installation of + | F5 | Edge Client for VPN
- The installation of the software is now executed
- During the installation, the Baramundi icon will rotate in your taskbar
- As soon as this is complete, the Baramundi agent will report this
- Now restart the computer
First start
- After installation, open the program Big-IP Edge Client
- The client will now go through the initialization process and needs a short moment before it can be used.
- This only happens at the first start or when updates are available.
- The client is usually set to „Auto connection“ when it is first run
- It is recommended to always use the Connect and Disconnect buttons during subsequent use, as the automatic connection requires „becoming active“ anyway and therefore offers no added value.
- From here on, the initialization is complete and the login works identically at every start

Using the Edge Client (the VPN software)
Login and establishing a connection
- Open the program Big-IP Edge Client
- Click on Connect
- Your system browser will now open.
- We recommend using Chrome or Edge here, as there may be connection problems when using Firefox.
- The open browser will now perform some system checks.
- If your system does not pass this check, you must contact our service desk.
- Please make a note of any error messages displayed.
- Make a note of the time of the connection attempt.
- Provide the information collected to the service desk to assist us in resolving the problem or error in a timely manner
- Once the checks have been completed, you will be shown a login window.
- Log in with your AD account (Windows login).
- kürzel@staff.hsrw
- Windows password
- The browser should now tell you that the window can be closed.
- The client now establishes the connection to the university network.
- Please note that the network connection may be interrupted while the tunnel is being established.
- If you are making a phone call or doing other network-related things, there may be brief interruptions.
- As soon as the connection has been successfully established, the client minimizes itself and you are successfully connected to the university network via VPN.
Disconnecting the connection
- As soon as the connection has been established as described above, the client minimizes itself to the system icons in the task bar.
- To disconnect again, navigate to your system icons at the bottom right of the screen and click on Show hidden icons
- Double click on BigIP Edge Client.
- The VPN software opens again.
- Now click on Disconnect.
- The VPN connection is terminated.
- Attention, the network connection may be interrupted during the disconnection process.
- If you are making a phone call or doing other network-related things, there may be brief interruptions.
- We recommend starting the connection every day in the home office before starting work and disconnecting at the end of the working day.
Further usage instructions and recommendations
- When switching from home office to office or vice versa: restart your device and do not use energy-saving mode.
- If there are problems with the connection, please delete the browser cache and reconnect.
- Hold or state the following information when you report a problem with the connection.
- Displayed error message.
- Inventory number of the end device.
- Date and time of the connection attempt.
- Name of the user
- The colleagues at the service desk will never ask you for your personal password!
